Building a calm digital sanctuary for stories, perspectives, and emotions that often go unheard.

Kokoro is a personal writing project and digital journal by Jasleen Kaur — a developer by profession and a quiet observer by nature. The platform explores deep emotional thoughts, everyday reflections, and honest experiences around healing, identity, and the quiet strength in vulnerability.

Kokoro (心), meaning “heart, mind, and soul” in Japanese, reflects the inner world we all carry. It is not just a blog — it’s a soft space for readers of all kinds to pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves. The project was built to be simple, human-centered, and intentionally slow — away from trends, toward timeless expression.

Project Goals

The objective behind Kokoro’s digital home was to:

  • Create a lightweight blog site that feels calm, personal, and distraction-free
  • Highlight original writing (poems, essays, letters, reflections) in a readable, mobile-friendly format
  • Make it search-engine friendly for long-term visibility
  • Allow for future monetization via ads or digital product sales
  • Keep the platform expandable for future categories like short stories, audio entries, and newsletters

Unlike many personal blogs, Kokoro needed to look deliberately crafted, not templated, a digital space that reflects the same care as the writing itself.

The Challenge

Kokoro is a solo project — written, designed, and developed by the creator while managing a full-time role and building a startup (Nexora Axon). The biggest challenge was creating:

  • A professional-quality design with very limited time
  • A structure that welcomes all types of readers — not just women, not just dreamers
  • A style that balances aesthetic softness with search engine structure
  • A clean, custom brand identity that doesn’t feel “trendy” but remains modern
Discover

The brand research and planning phase involved:

  • Studying minimalist blog experiences that focus on writing as the core
  • Reviewing modern design blogs, poetry sites, and digital journals
  • Creating category systems that are both emotional and SEO-intelligent
  • Researching long-form article readability, typographic rhythm, and contrast

Insights gathered showed a need to keep things light, breathable, and centered, no sidebars, no clutter, and just enough color to feel warm.

Define

The functional and design goals became clear:

  • A soft, pastel-toned brand with neutral base colors
  • A layout with a clear reading hierarchy and emotional pacing
  • Sections for poems, letters, and thought articles, without making it feel “genre-locked”
  • Room for news plugins, search, and category tags without making it feel crowded

Blog system powered by custom WordPress with future flexibility

Typography & Visual Language

We chose rounded, legible fonts and paired them with a soft pastel palette—evoking calm and emotional safety. The visual language supports trust-building while guiding users toward meaningful actions (inquiries, bookings, sign-ups).
